Harlequin Duck - Histrionicus histrionicus

Harlequin Duck portrait - Barnegat Light, New Jersey

The Harlequin Duck is aptly named, with the male's bold patterning he looks like he could be a circus clown. This male is resting on a rock near crashing surf where these birds spend the winter on the coast. In the spring, they will migrate inland where they raise their families along swift moving rivers. It could be said that the Harlequin Duck spends its entire life in the presence of violently moving water.
